Alan J. Forster MD, FRCPC, MSc is the Vice President, Innovation and Quality at the Ottawa Hospital, Canada’s largest Academic Health Sciences Center. His focus is enabling teams to create higher value health care – in which patient-centered health outcomes are realized and health system costs are lowered.
Over his career, he has led research on patient safety and quality improvement. He performed the seminal work evaluating the incidence of adverse effects following discharge from the hospital. He has also led the Ottawa Hospital’s data strategy, which has been used to support research, operations, and planning. Overall, his work has led to over 225 publications in peer review journals.
In addition to his role at the Ottawa Hospital, Alan is a leader in the field of healthcare quality. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He provides ongoing advice to agencies at the local, national, and international levels, and he has served as associated editor for several prestigious peer-review journals.

Merrilee Fullerton (Minister of Long Term Care) - Sept 29, 2019
Dr. Merrilee Fullerton was elected as the MPP for Kanata-Carleton in 2018. She served as the Minister of Training, Colleges, and Universities, and now serves as the Minister of Long-Term Care.
After graduating from the University of Ottawa Medical School, Fullerton practiced medicine locally, first with the Carleton Place Hospital and then as a family physician at Med-Team clinic in Kanata. She has been very active in professional and medical associations and local health care organizations. This has included advisory roles with both the Ontario Medical Association and Canadian Medical Association, and membership in the City of Ottawa Board of Health and the Local Health Integration Network serving Ottawa and area.
For the past decade, Fullerton commented and advocated in media and public forums for better health services. She is a champion of improving the delivery of Ontario’s health care, particularly long-term care services.

Louis Thériault, Vice-President, Public Policy, Conference Board of Canada shared findings from the Conference Board’s forecast of continuing care for Canadian seniors. According to the Conference Board of Canada, by 2026 over 2.4 million Canadians age 65+ will require paid and unpaid continuing care supports—up 71 per cent from 2011. By 2046, this number will reach nearly 3.3 million. Spending on continuing care for seniors will increase from $29.3 billion in 2011 to $184.2 billion in 2046.
